The struggle for maritime communications during the Spanish Civil War 1936–1939 (based on materials from the Soviet naval mission in Spain)

Based on documents from domestic archives, the article examines the issue of the struggle for sea communications during the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939. The author analyzes the history of the organization of sea convoys traveling from the Soviet Union to the Spanish Republic, as well as the specifics of conducting military operations on the key sea communications of the Spanish Republic.

The development of anti-Catholic discourse: The image of William Parry in Elizabethan propaganda

The article is devoted to the problem of the formation of the image of the Catholic enemy, one of the prototypes for which was William Parry. Based on the original materials, the author shows the Elizabethan government’s use of William Parry’s affiliation to Catholicism in the fight against the Queen’s detractors. It is concluded that, using the example of the failed conspiracy of William Parry, government propaganda of the 1580s demonstrated the immorality and lowliness of the spiritual principles of state traitors as a special social group.

The problem of the origin of hereditary citizens in Munster of the XVI–XVII centuries in German historiography

The article presents an overview of scientific works of German researchers of the XIX–XXI centuries, touching upon the problem of the origin of the hereditary citizens of Munster in the XVI–XVII centuries. Based on the analysis, we identified three directions of scientific research on the problem. The representatives of the first direction linked the origin of hereditary citizens with land ownership. The supporters of the second direction claim that the hereditary citizens originated from the ministeriales.

Sorcerers and necromancers in defense of the French monarchy

This article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of the participation of sorcerers in the political life of France in the late 14th – early 15th centuries. The immediate reasonforthis wasthe king’s illness, which doctors could not cure. Thenthe Duke of Burgundy Philipthe Brave decided to attract sorcerers so that they, using their connections with demons and devils, would return Charles VI to health. Thus a paradoxical situation arose when the most Christian monarch of Europe began to be treated with the help of evil spirits.

The political elite of early Hellenistic Priene according to honorific decrees

The article considers a social status of prominent members of political elite of Priene and civic values of the polis during the Early Hellenistic period. Honorary decrees for magistrates and military leaders show that the political elite of Priene in the late 4th and during the 3rd centuries BC based its authority on public office instead of wealth. Civic values in this period were still democratic and egalitarian. The social status of early Hellenistic elite of the polis contrasts with late Hellenistic elite, whose authority was founded on wealth.

Победа «искупителей» в штатах Глубокого Юга США в 1870-х гг.

В статье рассматриваются политика и основные представители «Искупления» — движения, возникшего на Юге США в период Реконструкции. Эта коалиция, состоявшая преимущественно из представителей Демократической партии, ставила своей целью восстановление власти белого населения и отмену достижений эпохи Реконструкции, включая предоставление гражданских прав освобождённым рабам. Показано, что движение активно противостояло республиканским правительствам и их союзникам — вольноотпущенникам, «саквояжникам» и «скалавагам».

Лорд У. Ренсимен и его дипломатическая миссия на страницах местной английской периодической печати в контексте политической статистики Великобритании

В статье рассматривается английская периодическая печать 1938 года с использованием методов контент-анализа и программного кода на языке Python. Анализ направлен на выявление корреляций между упоминаниями лорда У. Ренсимена в газетах различных английских графств и рядом статистических показателей: результатами парламентских выборов, уровнем явки на них и безработицы, а также географическим положением регионов Англии. Хронологические рамки исследования охватывают период с 25 июля по 3 августа 1938 г.

Saratov Room Commission (1808–1872). To a History Accommodation of Armies in Russia

In XVIII–XIX centuries before a regional and central authority was a problem of accommodation of armies. The armies were placed in the houses of the citizens. Only a small part was in the special buildings. In 1808 Alexander I has signed the decree about creation in the cities of the state the special «room commissions». To their functions concerned drawing up the lists of the houses the towns people and distribution in them the militaries and officials. In this article, the activity «room commissions» is consider on an example the city Saratov.

Problems of Development of New Mechanics on Stalingrad Tractor Factory within the First Five-year Period

The person dressed in working special clothes of Stalingrad tractor factory became one of the symbols of the first five-year period. In everyday lives of great construction he was changing the country and simultaneously itself, adjusting the «time forward». In problems of construction and development of new mechanics at a tractor factory, all contradictions and complexities of the accelerated industrialization within the first five-year period were reflected as in a mirror.

V.A. Zhukovsky and Austerlitz («Song of a Bard on the Grave of Slavs-Conquerers» in Its Historical Context)

The article deals with Zhukovsky’s poem analyzed in the context of notions of Austerlitz battle that existed in Russian society in 1806. The defeat near Austerlitz passed by Russian officials off as almost a victory caused a real enthusiasm in the public. Alexander I’s return to active foreign policy was met with approval. Before start of a new military campaign of 1806–1807 Zhukovsky wrote a propaganda poem which reflected both the tsar’s intentions in his foreign policy and public opinion.
