Soviet healthcare as a tool of USSR cultural diplomacy in Iran in the 1920–1940s

The article, relying upon unpublished archival sources, analyzes the use of the healthcare potential as an additional means of creating a positive image of the Soviet Union abroad. The contribution of both the People’s Commissariat for Health and the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries (VOKS) to the organization of Soviet medical diplomacy in the Iranian direction is demonstrated.

Советское здравоохранение как инструмент культурной дипломатии СССР в Иране в 1920–1940-х гг.

В статье на основе неопубликованных архивных материалов проанализировано использование потенциала отечественного здравоохранения в качестве дополнительного средства создания положительного образа Советского Союза за границей. Продемонстрирован вклад и Наркомата здравоохранения, и Всесоюзного общества культурной связи с заграницей (ВОКС) в организацию советской медицинской дипломатии на иранском направлении.

The Soviet Policy Towards the Former Tsarist Concessions in Iran (1921–1927): Regional and International Contexts

The article deals with the Soviet policy towards the former tsarist concessions in Iran in 1921-27. Despite the renunciation of the former tsarist concessions in Iran, the Soviet leadership de facto tried to control the disposal of the strategically most important of them: either through legal instruments or by force. The analysis of the existing sources on the problem demonstrates that at the heart of the policy there were the strategic interests of the Soviet state.
